Intern's View of Attending on a Restoration Project, Empowered by"The Restoration Toolbox" by Ishika Kapoor
Architecture is not merely bricks and mortar; it's a tangible link to our history, culture, and identity. As an aspiring architect with a passion for heritage preservation, embarking on an architecture conservation internship with The Restoration Toolbox was a dream come true. This transformative experience provided me with insights into the delicate balance between preserving the past and shaping the future.
Learning the Craft
The team was handed over the project to document the prestigious Chandni Chowk’s landmark- Town Hall. My initial days were a whirlwind of learning. I was introduced to the intricacies of architectural documentation, where every detail, from cracks on a wall to the texture of a historic door, was meticulously recorded. It was through these processes that I understood how even the smallest elements hold valuable clues about a building's history and evolution. Exploring the Heart of India: Town Hall in New Delhi Nestled within the vibrant tapestry of New Delhi, India's capital city, lies a historical gem that echoes with the voices of the past and resonates with the aspirations of the present. The Town Hall, an architectural masterpiece and a cultural hub, stands as a testament to India's rich heritage and its ever-evolving identity.
Architectural Splendor:
The architecture of the Town Hall is an exquisite blend of neoclassical and Victorian styles, adorned with ornate columns, arched entrances, and intricate detailing. The grandeur of its facade is matched only by the spacious interiors, eaturing high ceilings, elegant chandeliers, and majestic staircases. As one steps inside, a sense of awe takes over, transporting visitors back in time to an era of opulence and elegance. Modern Relevance: While the Town Hall is steeped in history, it has seamlessly adapted to the changing times. Renovations and updates have been made to ensure that the building remains functional and relevant in the 21st century.
A Dialogue with the Past:
Each day felt like a conversation with the past. Restoring a weathered façade to its former glory or piecing together a broken sculpture felt like honoring the craftsmen who had poured their hearts into creating these wonders. I could almost hear their whispers, guiding my hands as I worked diligently to resurrect their creations. As we walk through its corridors and stand beneath its grand dome, we are reminded that while time marches forward, the echoes of the past continue to resonate, guiding us towards a future that is as rich and diverse as the stories etched within the walls of the Town Hall.
Inspiration for the Future
This internship with The Restoration Tool Box wasn't just about skills; it was about perspective. I returned with a newfound appreciation for the resilience of heritage structures and the need to integrate them into contemporary urban landscapes. Armed with this knowledge, I am determined to champion the cause of architectural conservation and weave it into my future projects.
Key Learnings

● Conducted site analysis, assessed existing conditions, and contributed insights to filling out the inventories.
Team Collaboration:
● Learned effective communication and teamwork skills, essential for successful project outcomes.
Time Management and Prioritization-
● Managed multiple tasks simultaneously, meeting project deadlines and adapting to changing priorities.
● Developed effective time management strategies to balance design work, documentation, and coordination tasks.
These experiences have not only enriched my academic knowledge but have also equipped me with practical skills that I am excited to apply as I continue my journey in the field of architecture. As I move forward in my architectural career, I carry with me not only the skills I acquired but also a deep reverence for the stories etched into the walls of our built heritage. In the delicate dance between past and present, I am proud to be a part of the legacy of those who safeguard our architectural treasures for generations to come. So, I would like to conclude by quoting-
"Conservation is not a burden on progress; it's an investment in a sustainable future. Let's pave the way for a greener tomorrow."
