My Internship Experience with Restoration Toolbox: Aisha Tahir
I am deeply appreciative of the invaluable experience extended to me by Aishwarya Tipnes Architects and Restoration Toolbox for affording me the incredible opportunity to participate in the restoration project of the historic Town Hall in Chandani Chowk, Delhi. The privilege to be part of such a significant and meaningful endeavor has left an indelible mark on my understanding of architecture, historic preservation, and the intricate processes involved in revitalizing a piece of living history.
Reflecting upon my three-week internship with Aishwarya Tipnes Architects and Restoration Toolbox, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and accomplishment. These weeks were a pivotal phase in my journey as an architecture student, as they illuminated aspects of the field that transcend traditional classroom education. The exposure to real-world restoration practices, guided by experts in the field, not only enriched my knowledge but also shaped my perspective as a budding architect.
The Restoration Toolbox provided an extensive and comprehensive repository of knowledge, comprising a treasure trove of documentation, methodologies, and case studies pertaining to the repair, restoration, and construction processes. This repository was akin to a beacon, guiding me through the intricacies of historical preservation and architectural restoration. The documentation offered insights into the architectural evolution of the Town Hall, from its inception to its current state, thereby facilitating a deeper comprehension of the challenges and responsibilities associated with its restoration.
A pivotal aspect of my learning experience was the exposure to condition mapping and analysis, a dimension of architecture that had previously remained distant within the confines of textbooks and theoretical discussions. Under the guidance of experts, I was introduced to the meticulous process of assessing the present state of the Town Hall. This involved a comprehensive analysis of its structural integrity, material deterioration, architectural details, and overall aesthetics. Through hands-on involvement, I learned to recognize the subtle nuances that contribute to the historical and architectural significance of the building.
Furthermore, the opportunity to engage with professionals who are deeply vested in the restoration field proved to be invaluable. Interacting with architects, historians, conservators, and craftsmen exposed me to diverse viewpoints and multifaceted approaches to restoration. These interactions enriched my understanding of the collaborative nature of restoration work, where each discipline contributes its unique expertise to achieve a harmonious whole. This holistic approach has broadened my perspective on architecture as a collaborative endeavor that encompasses history, culture, aesthetics, and technology.
The Town Hall itself emerged as an eloquent teacher during my internship. Its weathered façade whispered tales of bygone eras, its architectural details echoed the craftsmanship of a different time, and its walls seemed to carry the weight of history. The internship enabled me to listen to these narratives and engage in a dialogue with the building itself. It taught me to interpret the language of architecture – the subtle language of arches, columns, and ornamentation – and understand the context in which these elements were conceived.
I would be remiss not to acknowledge the dedication and mentorship provided by Aishwarya Tipnis Architects and Restoration Toolbox. The guidance offered was not confined to technical expertise; it extended to cultivating a sense of responsibility toward architectural heritage. The emphasis on ethical considerations, sustainable practices, and community engagement underscored the role of architecture in nurturing a harmonious relationship between the built environment and society. In conclusion, my one-month internship with Aishwarya Tipnis Architects and Restoration Toolbox was a transformative experience that transcended the boundaries of traditional learning. It enriched my understanding of architecture, historic preservation, and the intricacies of restoration work. The internship enabled me to witness the fusion of theory and practice, transforming me from a student into a practitioner with a heightened appreciation for the nuances of architectural heritage. As I reflect upon this experience, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity and excitement for the journey that lies ahead as I continue to contribute to the preservation and celebration of our architectural legacy.
